My grandmother always mistakenly calls Carleton “Carlson.” It’s not her fault; she had never heard of the school before I came here three years ago. It just doesn’t have the same name recognition as Harvard, Yale, Stanford, or even Williams and Swarthmore. I’m betting that within the next five to 10 years, though, Carleton will have close to the same prestige as those aforementioned institutions. This way, grandmothers across America will be able to proudly remember the name of the college that their grandchildren attend.

In the past couple of years, Carleton has jumped in rankings of the best liberal arts colleges. Carleton has improved its position on the list every year I have been here, and it shows no signs of slowing down. Carleton’s academic reputation has earned it the moniker “the Harvard of the Midwest.” As a result, the school has garnered more interest from the East and West Coasts as the post-9/11 trend of college students looking for a good education in a small town environment develops.

I came to Carleton because I knew that I wanted to go to a small, academically challenging school where I would have a chance to participate in numerous activities, get to know interesting people, and not feel too bad about admitting that I actually liked going to school. For me, Carleton has met all of those expectations and more. Honestly, as the college becomes increasingly more selective in its admissions standards, I wonder if I’d have been able to get on the waiting list for the class of 2008 with my high school transcript. This is an exciting time to be at Carleton; the school is growing and continually reaching new levels of excellence while retaining that certain something that makes it unique.

It’s nearly impossible to capture the essence of Carleton College, even in a 170-page guidebook. Hopefully, reading the information gathered here can give you sense of life at the school and what it means to be a Carl. I recommend that you visit Carleton in person after you read this book, if you haven’t done so already. If you can’t visit, then I think this book will give you an accurate portrayal of what it’s like to spend four years of your life in Northfield, MN, even if you haven’t experienced the sheer joy of walking across campus on a 50-below-zero morning.
