Reality-based advice for a changed law market May 12, 2010 Jason E. James (Vienna, VA) 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
This book is the first I've read that gives honest, candid, and real advice on how to succeed in law school. It makes a world of difference that the author is a recent graduate. I don't need to tell you that the economy has drastically changed in the last few years, and as such, so has the law school experience. The author is completely honest and doesn't try to sugar-coat his advice in order to cater to people who probably shouldn't be going to law school in the first place. Most importantly, it's imperative to get a first-hand account based on today's realities, not advice based on how law school operated fifteen years ago and probably wasn't that accurate in the first place. Get it from the source, get it timely, get this book.
The only honest law school guide I've read May 14, 2010 BC 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
As a recent graduate of UVA Law School and a practicing attorney, I have to say that Michael West's guide is the only credible book on law school and law firms that I've read. West cuts through all the BS that law schools and law firms feed to students and applicants, and gives a brutally honest picture of what goes on behind the scenes. If you're in college and thinking about law school, you should read this book IMMEDIATELY. Michael West is the only author I know of who gives realistic, pragmatic advice to students about how law school admissions really work, and how to maximize your chances at getting into a good school. For current and newly admitted students, this book gives great advice on how to succeed in classes and at law firms. I only wish West had published this book before I started my legal career.
The One Book You Should Read Before Attending Law School June 5, 2010 PTM2009 (New York, NY) 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
I'm at a friend's house and he has a stack of law school "preparation books" on the coffee table, because his younger brother is going to law school. I'm a law school grad, so naturally I started rifling through the books out of interest. I started reading this book, because it was quick and to the point, and quickly realized that it was dead on. I read prep books before going to law school, and they are all total BS. This book is the one book you should read before going to law school. It tells it how it is, even though sometimes you're going think it can't be that simple. I bought this book and sent it to a cousin thinking about law school. From now on out when anyone thinking about law school or just starting law school starts to ask me questions, I'm going to tell them to just read this book and it will explain it all.
An excellent resource for pre-law and law students alike. May 13, 2010 Dan Adams (NY) 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
As a law school graduate and practicing attorney, I can attest to both the accuracy and importance of the information Beat Law School conveys. Among other things, the author points out the considerations many pre-law students ignore when deciding to go to law school.
Most law students are not as informed as they should be both about the decision to attend law school and about how to approach law school as a law student. This book seeks to remedy these issues and reads as a competent, firsthand account by a recent law school graduate. The author might even persuade you to avoid going to law school altogether, and as a result you will be able to avoid becoming a disgruntled lawyer (of which there are far too many already). I recommend this as a real-world survival guide for students thinking about law school and those who have already made the decision to attend law school.
Good Advice Good Sense of Humor May 23, 2010 Kathy B. 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
I just graduated law school but read this book because it was recommended by a friend. Obviously it's too late for me to really use the advice but I found some of the stories pretty funny as I definitely knew ridiculous kids like that in law school. As far as the advice though, it's 100% true. If you're type A this might be sad for you. If you're a normal person it's great. I read the conventional law school books before I started...tried their methods, got a B+ average, stopped studying, and still got a B+ average. I like the emphasis on being social in law school...especially in this economy. I wish I had read this book before law school, I could have gotten the same grades and had a lot more fun and made more connections.
