5 out of 5 stars Best Ryan Adams since Gold   January 6, 2009

This album really grows on you. "Magick" is a wonderful anthem for those of us who grew up making out to 33 RPM disc. Being interupted every twenty minutes to change records may have saved a few unwanted pregnancies. The pedal steel on "Born Into A Light" is also balm for the soul.

If you like Ryan, Gram, or Willie, buy this record.

5 out of 5 stars Practically Perfect   December 31, 2008
I'm not sure what the demographics and qualifications of the consumer reviewers are on this site but I don't hold myself out as any more qualified. I will say, though, that I own almost everything Ryan Adams has released, from Whiskeytown on down. Like many "warm weather" fans, a number of the reviewers here somehow claim some metaphysical expertise in analyzing how "Cardinology" compares against his earlier work. Many of them would rather he'd re-released "Gold" with the songs played backwards. With almost each successive release, I am terribly pleased with all of his newer material. His stuff is so deep, diverse and rich - musically and lyrically - that the old stuff never gets old and the new seems to carve its own place in the burgeoning body of work. I'm on the site today to buy "29", which I somehow missed when I was so engaged in enjoying "Cold Roses" and "Jacksonville City Nights." "Cardinology" is Ryan Adams' musical synchronicity. If you see him and the Cardinals live, then you'll truly get it. Until then, get this release. You won't be sorry, whether you're a newbie fan or one that pines for some rescue blues.

5 out of 5 stars Easy Tiger, Part Deux   December 28, 2008
This to me could be Easy Tiger, Part Two...incidentally, East Tiger, along with Cardinology, are the only two Ryan Adams albums I've kept. I've bought a lot of his stuff and, in my humble opinion, most of it is a rambling mess. Cardinology does sound like an attempt at producing a more refined, focused and, gulp, commercial sound. But you still get yer country, folk, pop and rock all mashed together to produce some beautiful and, yes, catchy music. True, Side Two bogs a little, but Side One is awesome. I guess it becomes a question of which Ryan you like...the prolific but scattered sketchbook artist who releases tons of demos with some buried nuggets or the Ryan attempting to make the great but compromised (reigned in?) "classic" rock record. Both are underrated...

3 out of 5 stars Yawn   December 24, 2008

This is not a bad album, it is just boring. There are no bad songs, but only a couple of good ones. I've followed Ryan Adams's career since Whiskeytown and pretty much enjoy everything he puts out. Maybe this one will grow on me, because I really want to like it. It just feels out of place and flat. I won't lose faith in the guy though, since his track record suggests that he will release something new soon. If you really loved Easy Tiger, Cold Roses, or even older stuff like Heartbreaker, then Cardinology will probably disappoint you.

4 out of 5 stars Sound great live!   December 22, 2008

I saw them live at the Staples Center on December 4th. They opened for OASIS and sounded very good. So good, that after hearing their music, I purchased their cd at the concert. OASIS was great by the way.
